The Gordon “Bubba” Dove Jr. Foundation and the Krewe of Hyacinthians are welcoming locals to “Houma’s Where the Heart Is,” a mass distribution event aimed at providing relief to the community in Ida’s wake. In addition to relief supplies, the event, which will take place at 1105 Highway 55 in Montegut (between Sacred Heart Church and the fire station) this Saturday, will have 4,000-plus plate lunches and feature live music, kid-friendly fun and more.

Shea’ Cox, one of the event’s organizers and Hyacinthians Community Outreach Chairperson, said the Montegut location was chosen to provide easier access for residents of the lower-lying bayou communities of Terrebonne Parish. “It’s not too far into Houma, so people can get the supplies they desperately need,” she said. “Our goal was to make sure that this was something they could get to, and it could be a bright spot in their lives for just one afternoon.”

Donated by Trahan’s Heating & Air Conditioning and Lisa Benoit, the plate lunches are chicken, pork and sausage jambalaya with white beans. Meals come with a cold drink as well. Brooke’s Sno-World will also be on location serving free snowballs.

For the area’s children, there will be kid-friendly meals (nuggets, fries and treats provided by Bayou Home Care), Halloween games, free toys and face painting by Let’s FACE it.

Casie & Jonny, Rick Price and DJ Rhett will provide the afternoon’s live entertainment in partnership with Mike Levron Productions.

In addition to relief, entertainment, games and hot meals, Houma’s Where the Heart Is will also offer resources to assist those devastated by Ida in their road to recovery. Verizon will set up charging and WiFi stations, and there will be laptops available for residents to make FEMA claims and create DNSAP accounts. In addition, Sye Broussard, an attorney with Broussard & Dove, will advise on insurance claims.

The event will begin at noon, and all its food, resources and amenities will be free. Cox said anyone wishing to donate supplies could bring them to the Montegut location at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Folks wanting to make a monetary donation, with funds going toward relief efforts in the bayou areas, can do so through the below Venmo account:

“I’ve seen the community come together, despite the fact that the majority of Houma and the surrounding areas did not have power. Everyone has been so willing to rush to the aid of the people who need it the most,” Cox said. “Everyone has put everything aside and has come together for the greater good.”
