Merle Smith Lewis, 91, a native and resident of Houma, La., died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church. She graduated from Lorton Preparatory School of Houma and earned a B.A. Degree (1940) from Newcomb College, Tulane University. She was a past president and long time member of the Terrebonne Garden Club, was a charter member of Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society where she served as board member and secretary, and was also a member of the Louisiana Preservation Alliance and the History and Preservation Society of Louisiana.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha Lewis; son, Felix (Colleen) Lewis IV; one granddaughter, Caroline Lewis; and brother, William (Jo-Anne) Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Dixon Lewis Jr.; parents, Thomas and Blanche Menville Smith; son, Felix Lewis III; brother, Thomas Baker Smith Jr.
She is buried at Magnolia Cemetery.
