Since 2011, Houma native Taylor Hartman, aka Tron Pheiffer, has released a well-acclaimed body of work that has garnered him a significant following on social media. His metaphorical thought-provoking lyrics, experimental cadences and brilliant beat selections that ring true in his music grab the ear of anyone who is a fan of hip hop—old or young. We recently sat down with the young artist to discuss his complex sound, seasoned craft, biggest challenges and more.

Describe your sound.

“I tend to go for a more varied sound. I like all different types of music, so I incorporate different sounds and make them my own. That’s what I think makes my music so special to me.”

What goes into your craft?

“My craft is something I take very seriously, so the elements are very carefully placed. I’m always working on music, so I’m working on my lyrical ability, my songwriting, my cadence, my melodies and more. My life as the subject matter, intertwined with that is really what’s the basis of my music.”

What influences you?

“My biggest influences vary from different genres of music, different types of art and anything that gives me a spark. I can find inspiration from almost anything. From a conversation with a child to street graffiti, I can tell a story from my perspective and talk about anything.”

What has been the biggest challenge during your musical journey?

“My biggest challenges come from my environment, just to be honest. The small town aspect is great and detrimental at the same time. While I have time to work on my craft, there is no real outreach from the music business down here. The big challenge is trying to show the world that I am a great artist that is worth a listen. There’s an island that everybody seems to be on, and nobody is really looking for help. Everybody is very prideful in the hip-hop world down here, and no one is willing to show camaraderie and form a platform to elevate. We all would rather separate.”

What is something that you can share with younger up-and-coming artists that you wish you knew when you started?

“The advice I can share with younger up-and-coming artists is to use your time wisely. Craft your skill and make sure that you become the best version of yourself you can be. Also, don’t be discouraged. Everything takes time, so don’t rush your greatness. Make sure you’re happy with the product before you put it out to the masses.”

Bonus Question: What television show, movie or book describes your rap style and why?

“My style is a mix of “The Shining”, “Golden Girls” and “Swat Kats”. Although different in style, they all carry different elements that not only shaped me as an artist, they also shaped me as a human being.”
