A 43-year-old Houma man is in custody of the city’s police department on attempted murder charges after he allegedly fired a shot during a skirmish during an incident on Tuesday.

At 10:30 on June 27, HPD was called to King Street after reports of shots fired.

Once on the scene, officers discovered that someone was shot during an altercation.

As the investigation, HPD learned the victim, a 41-year-old male, was standing near a residence within the 100 block of King Street when he was allegedly approached by Greg Jackson, 43, of King Street.

Authorities said once Jackson approached the victim, he struck him on the rear of his head with a pistol, which led to a skirmish.

In the melee, authorities said the victim attempted to disarm Jackson.

During the struggle, officers said shots were fired from the weapon. Jackson was struck in the hand, which allowed the victim to successfully retrieve the weapon from the suspect, giving it to HPD upon arrival.

Jackson was taken to a local hospital for treatment to his hand.

After being discharged, he was charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon. Authorities also learned that he had an outstanding warrant in the 32nd Judicial Court.

The victim was treated for a head laceration by Acadian Ambulance and was released at the scene.

HPD said it later learned after interviewing several witnesses that the encounter stemmed from a previous altercation the men had at a local bar – weeks before the incident.
