An investigation is under way at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center after an inmate died over the weekend.

Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre said that inmate Samuel Williams, 36, of Westwego, was found hanging in his cell at 4:37 a.m. on Sunday by correctional officers.

He was taken to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say they believe Williams’ death was self-inflicted, but an investigation is ongoing. LPSO says Williams had no known conflicts with inmates and he was not believed to be a danger to himself.

Williams was incarcerated due to an arrest in mid-September following a pursuit which began in Assumption Parish.

LPSO deputies assisted in the pursuit after Williams drove into Lafourche Parish on La. Highway 1 shortly after 1:45 a.m. on that morning.

The suspect turned down La. Highway 3185, then fled on foot near Talbot Avenue before being taken into custody and charged with aggravated flight from an officer, resisting an officer and other traffic violations, as well as active warrants for contempt of court in Lafourche and also a warrant in Patterson for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
