A public complaint, then a traffic stop led the Houma Police Department to a large drug bust.

On April 7th at 10:30 a.m., HPD received a call concerning a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse traveling near the 3000 block of Barrow Street in Houma. The complainant said the vehicle was possibly tied to narcotics deals.

During investigation, HPD conducted surveillance of the location and started gathering information.

As the investigation continued, HPD observed the above-mentioned vehicle making various trips to and from a residence within the 3000 block of Barrow

During a viewing of the surveillance, HPD observed the suspect’s vehicle departing the area and the driver, identified as Christopher Rice, 25, of Academy Street, was seen not wearing his seatbelt.

During a traffic stop, Rice was contacted by police, as well as a passenger in the vehicle, Yvette C. Chambers, 31, of Daniel Turner Trailer Court.

Officers said they detected the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, which prompted officers to call for HPD K-9 “Gunner” to work on the investigation.

Gunner gave a positive indication for narcotics in the vehicle, which led officers to conduct a physical search of the car.

During the search, authorities found 21 grams of crack cocaine, 7.79 grams of powder cocaine, 17.81 grams of heroin, 1.21 grams of methamphetamine, 2.74 grams of marijuana, several Xanax pills, a digital scale and more than $1,400 cash in the vehicle.

HPD immediately arrested Rice and Chambers, giving each narcotics charges related to cocaine, heroin, meth, prescription pills, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

They were also given charges for obstruction of justice and transactions involving proceeds from dealing a controlled dangerous substance.

Rice was also given charges for not wearing a seatbelt, no insurance and driving with a suspended driver’s license.

Both suspects were taken to the Terrebonne Parish Jail, and HPD said it would like to thank the public for its help in sparking the investigation.
