A Houma man is in custody of the Thibodaux Police Department after he allegedly was hired to build a fence, collected a large deposit, then never completed the project.

Authorities said that in April 2016, James Verrett, 50, of 5460 Shrimpers Row, Houma, was hired by a victim to build a brick fence around a home in Thibodaux.

Authorities said that Verrett informed the victim that the project would cost $5,700 and the victim would have to pay a $4,200 deposit, which he did.

The victim and Verrett allegedly agreed that the victim would level portions of his yard prior to the fence being built.

Toward the end of May, the victim allegedly contacted Verrett and told him that the leveling had been done and the fence could be built.

Verrett allegedly told the victim that the materials would arrive in a few days, but they didn’t. He then allegedly avoided contact from the victim, which led the victim to call Thibodaux Police.

Verrett continued to avoid contact from both the victim and police for several months, so a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On April 6, 2017 at 4 p.m., TPD officers picked up the suspect at the Terrebonne Parish Jail. He’s charged with residential contractor fraud and a 17th JDC Warrant for failure to appear.

His bond is set at $5,500.
