On Thursday, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet announced ‘Operation Silent Night,’ an ongoing investigation that has so far resulted in eight arrests connected to recent gang violence.

“The law-abiding citizens in Terrebonne Parish deserve peace, and that’s in every single neighborhood in our parish,” said Soignet, who was joined by District Attorney Joseph Waitz Jr., Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman and Trooper Derek Senegal with the Louisiana State Police.

The sheriff said the operation originates from a shooting at Sonic on the west side of Houma on the afternoon of July 19. In the incident 21-year-old Mcgarrete Jackson was killed, police said.

A gang investigative team was then soon put together, Soignet said. The gang unit was formed with members of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and Narcotics Division to address this spike in violence, the Sheriff’s Office said.

From there, other shootings in Terrebonne Parish were linked to the gang identifying as the “Bag Chasin Babies,” also known as “Schriever Gorillas.”

Officials say they were able to gain information on “Bag Chasin Babies” through social media.

In late November, authorities arrested 19-year-old Armontae Davis, 19-year-old Arvontae Davis, 22-year-old Xavier Walker and 17-year-old Ahcory Davis (to be tried as an adult) for attempted murder and damage to property in connection to a shooting at St. Charles Main streets. The Sheriff’s Office said except for Walker and Ahcory Davis, all the suspects in that shooting were out on bond from the July 19 incident at Sonic and that the shooting near St. Charles Street is considered retaliation for that shooting.

Working with the Terrebonne Parish District Attorney’s Office, more individuals have been indicted who are currently at large: Chad Alex of Thibodaux, Daquan Sylvester of Thibodaux, Raymond Celestine of Schriever and Travis Mart Jr. of Thibodaux. “We’re going to find them,” Soignet said. “And they might be running. That’s fine — we’re going to catch them.”

“[For] this particular gang and their affiliates, I think it’s [the operation] going to quiet things down a little bit,” Soignet noted. “And that’s why we kind of got the term ‘Operation Silent Night,’ so we can have a peaceful Christmas.”

The sheriff also issued a stern warning to those involved with or thinking about getting involved in gang activity.

“When you get involved in killing people and taking human life, there’s nothing glamorous about that job and dealing with drugs and doing the things you’re doing,” he said. “…If you get involved, it’s not going to end well for you in Terrebonne Parish because I’m not going to tolerate it.”
