A 32-year-old Houma woman allegedly jumped into Bayou Terrebonne last week to try and evade deputies attempting to arrest her on multiple charges.

At around 11:30 a.m. on June 15, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies said they observed a white car traveling at a high rate of speed on the shoulder of U.S. 90. It then exited onto La. Highway 182, allegedly passing several cars, including an unmarked deputy’s car.

Deputies said they attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver of the vehicle allegedly ignored deputies and continued west on La. Highway 182, driving erratically and reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Authorities said the driver then turned onto La. Highway 3087, later turning onto La. Highway 316 and crossing into Terrebonne Parish where Louisiana State Police joined the pursuit.

Troopers deployed spike strips at La. Highway 316 and Company Canal Road, but the driver avoided them and continued southbound. At the intersection of La. Highway 316 and La. Highway 24, the driver allegedly ignored a red light and then struck an SUV.

Authorities said no injuries were reported in the crash and the driver kept the car moving southbound onto La. Highway 24 and then onto La. Highway 55.

The driver eventually stopped the car in the 800 block of La. Highway 55, then allegedly jumped into Bayou Terrebonne before being apprehended by authorities shortly after.

Authorities identified the suspect as Autumn Picou, 32, of Houma. She was exhibiting signs of being under the influence of illegal narcotics, according to LPSO.

After being handcuffed, she allegedly attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly re-taken into custody.

Authorities also said they found Suboxone, oxycodone and legend drug pills in Picou’s possession.

The suspect was first taken to the Terrebonne Parish Jail and booked as a fugitive on outstanding charges she faced there.

Later, she was taken to Lafourche and booked on charges of aggravated flight from an officer, DWI, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, simple escape and possession of suboxone, oxycodone and a legend drug.

Her bond is set at $59,000 and a blood sample attempting to show the presence of illegal narcotics in the suspect’s system are pending results.

Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre said he wants to thank Louisiana State Police Troop C for assisting in the case.
