A 30-year-old Gray man is in custody of the Thibodaux Police Department after he posed as a tow truck employee to steal a vehicle.

On Sept. 13 at approximately 8:30 a.m., authorities were called by a victim who said his car, which was not in working condition, was taken from his property on the 300 block of West 10th Street.

Authorities said the suspect, Martin Dorsey, 30, of Bayou Blue Road, Gray, asked the victim’s son to move his vehicle so that he could tow the broken vehicle away.

The victim’s son thought his father arranged the towing, so he complied, while Dorsey took the vehicle off the premises.

Over time, the victim’s son learned that his father did not intend for the vehicle to be towed, which led to authorities being called to investigate.

One of the victim’s relatives was at the home at the time the incident took place and he was able to identify Dorsey as one of the suspects.

As TPD investigated, they learned that the vehicle had been sold to a scrap metal yard in Schriever for $164.29. The lot crushed the car upon arrival.

This led to authorities getting a warrant for Dorsey’s arrest.

On Oct. 5 at approximately 2:48 a.m., a TPD officer patrolling near the 600 block of Harrison Street spotted a bike without the proper lighting for nighttime riding.

Another man was on the handlebars of the bike, while it was being ridden.

Authorities conducted a stop on the bike and identified the two people on it. One of the men, later identified as Dorsey, gave authorities a fake name, telling the officer he didn’t have an ID on him.

Upon further investigation, authorities patted down Dorsey, located his ID and identified him, thus taking him into custody for his warrants.

He is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, resisting an officer and no proper lighting on a bike after sunset.

He is held on a $6,025 bond.
