A 30-year-old Thibodaux man killed a cat yesterday, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office.


He’s charged with aggravated cruelty to animals because the suspected weapon in the incident is a machete.

On Aug. 21, deputies were called to the 2100 block of Bayou Road in Thibodaux in reference to a complaint of animal cruelty.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that Cody Toups, 30, of Thibodaux, grabbed a cat from inside his girlfriend’s residence and threw it in Bayou Lafourche.


The girlfriend’s father attempted to rescue the cat at which time Toups grabbed a machete and struck the cat.

Authorities later found the animal deceased and floating the in bayou. It had a large laceration in its midsection.

Toups is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and is also held on an outstanding warrant for contempt of court.


Bond is set at $15,000.
