POKER WITH A PURPOSE – Aug. 4


The Schriever Lion’s Club hosts a Texas Hold ‘em poker tournament from 6 p.m. to midnight. The initial buy-in costs $50 and optional re-buys and add-ons cost $50 each. Eighty percent of the initial buy-in pot will be paid out. Space is limited to the first 100 players, but spectators are welcome and concessions are sold. Must be 21 to enter. Doors open at 4 p.m.

2012 BAYOU AREA TELETHON FOR CEREBRAL PALSY – Aug. 4-5 FREE

Originals and prints of artwork by notable artists including Salvador Dali, Walt Disney, Pablo Picasso and LeRoy Neiman and several others are auctioned to benefit the Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders, headquartered at Nicholls State University. Local artists’ work is also displayed. Cash, check and all major credit cards are accepted. Admission is $20, and people who reserve tickets early are eligible for a prize drawing.

The Larose Regional Park and Civic Center hosts “the largest indoor garage sale on Bayou Lafourche.” Thousands of items, including clothes, housewares, books, furniture and toys, are available in the air-conditioned civic center. CENTER STAGE SINGING COMPETITION – Aug. 18

A new singing champion is crowned at the sixth rendition of Houma’s popular singing competition. Twenty-one hopefuls take the stage to compete for the prize, which includes the opportunity to record a two-track CD. Special guests include aerolist Leah Kohn, comedian Steve Shaw and 2011 Center Stage winner Cameron Richard. Admission costs $8 for children aged 2 to 12 and $15 for people 13 and older. PROMENADE d’ART de FRANKLIN – Aug. 18 FREE

The City of Franklin Main Street Program hosts the third annual Promenade d’art de Franklin, or the Franklin Art Walk. Local and regional artists submit their original works for competition in the following mediums: drawing, basketry, painting, pottery, recycled art, handmade accessories, mixed media, photography, sculpture and fiber arts. Merchants host art venues along the sidewalks of Main Street. Attendees and artists are asked to wear white linen or white cotton.

Join the Fourth-Degree Knights of Columbus in Dulac for French, country and Cajun music and dancing. Cajun Sunrise performs. The Larose Regional Park and Civic Center hosts the seventh-annual Park Idol. Loosely based on the Fox hit television show American Idol, the competition is open to participants 8 years old and older. Competitors are divided into three age groups (8-12; 13-17; 18 and older), and auditions begin at 10 a.m. The first round follows at 1 p.m. and the final round begins at 3 p.m. It costs $1 to audition and $3 to view the afternoon session. The audience has a vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Louisiana’s oldest state-chartered harvest festival, an homage to the offshore industries that power Morgan City, returns for its 77th year. It features live music, more than 100 crafts vendors, children’s events, a car show and a 5k run.
