It is said that one of the best traits in a person is to be able to laugh at themselves; to be able to see the humor in their everyday lives and tendencies; and to be able to appreciate the lighter side of life.

It is also said that laughter is one of the best medicines against stress.

If that is true, then April 21 at the Cut Off Youth Center should be filled with relaxed locals ringing with laughter, when the Cajun Comedy Night takes place for the ninth-consecutive year. “We have a social dinner hour beginning at 5 o’clock,” said Daniel Callais, Youth Center Director, “and the humor starts at 6:30.”

Providing that humor will be Cajun Comedy Night veterans Leigh Babineaux and Johnny “Uncle Noon” Hoffman.

Babineaux brings her humor from New Iberia, while Hoffman is coming from right up the bayou in Thibodaux. “Ms. Babineaux has been here before, and so has Johnny,” said Callais. “They’ve always drawn good crowds, and people really enjoy them, because they’re real professional.”

Callais said all jokes will be filled with Cajun-type humor. “It’s a clean, family atmosphere,” he said. “You’re going to get about 45 minutes from each performer, and some of the best Cajun joke-telling you’ll hear.”

He added that later in the year, the Cut Off Youth Center will bring in four comedians to make up an All-Star Comedy Tour. “It’s a lot like that Blue Collar Comedy Tour on television, but it’s not red-necking, it’s Cajun,” said Callais. “We’ll usually do an All-Star Comedy Tour based on that, where there’s four comedians that come down and do the show.”

Admission for the show is $20, which includes the show and a meal of white beans, pork grillades, green beans, bread and a dessert.

A cash bar will also be available.

Callais said tickets can be purchased at the youth center or by calling (985) 632-7616, and a “will call” window will be available for those ordering from out of town.
