Krewe of Lul

Saturday, Feb. 9, 12 p.m. (Luling)

Perhaps the most relaxed parade of the season, the Krewe of Lul rolls with about 25 throwing and non-throwing floats through the streets of Luling.

This krewe is celebrating its 36th anniversary.

Each group of riders provides their own float and decorates them as they wish. They’ll toss loads of beads, cups, doubloons, novelties and many special throws, including scrolls celebrating the king and queen and last year’s anniversary. The Krewe of Lul parade has been led by the Hahnville High School Band every year since it began in 1978. This year, about 300 float riders, dance groups, local festival queens and show cars make up the parade.

The 2011 and 2012 parades were canceled due to inclement weather. Therefore, the 2011/2012 grand marshal, king and queen reign as the 2013 parade royalty.

The 2013 Krewe of Lul King and Queen are William “Bill” and Edie Sirmon.

The 2013 Krewe of Lul Grand Marshal is Glynn Boyd.

The parade captains responsible for organizing the parade event in St. Charles Parish are: Wanda Candies, Russell Lauve, Randy Lauve, Charles Oubre III and Debbie Dufresne Vial.

Krewe of Dionysus

Saturday, Feb. 9, 2 p.m. (Berwick-Bayou Vista)

Originally called the Berwick-Bayou Vista Mardi Gras Association, this krewe started in 1980. In 2001 the name was changed to the Krewe of Dionysus to fall into the tradition of choosing names to represent mystical gods and goddesses. Dionysus is the god of comedy, tragedy and wine.

Now in its 33rd year, the Krewe of Dionysus is made up of 100 couples that pitch from 13 throwing floats, as well as a number of truck trailers, four wheelers, fire trucks and horses. Various sound systems pump up the crowds with fun music.

The krewe is mystic so the identities of King and Queen Dionysus and the theme are kept secret until after the tableau and ball, which is scheduled for Feb. 2. Last year’s theme was “Around the World in Eighty Days.”

King Stephen Hebert

Queen Electa McCloy

Dukes: Brett Adams, Mark Spradling, David Tisdale, Scott Vice
