Kurt Dempster loves catfish.

“My dad was a fisherman, so it’s been in my blood for more than 40 years,” he said. “You never get tired of catfish. It’s just too good.”

And so is the 33rd Annual Louisiana Catfish Festival, which will return to the grounds of St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands Friday through Sunday, July 13 through 15.

“This festival is somewhat unique because it’s one of the last ones where all the food is prepared fresh on the grounds by our volunteers from the church,” explained Dempster, who makes his eighth return as festival chairman.

Catfish boulettes, catfish poboys, catfish platters and catfish sauce piquant will be made available to the public all three days.

Other menu items include seafood gumbo, soft-shell crab poboys, shrimp poboys, fried crab claws, jambalaya, hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes and much more.

“It’s all homegrown catfish that’s taken from our local bayous and lakes,” Dempster said. “The festival will have the good ol’ home cooking it always has.”

But that’s not all.

Attendees of the Louisiana Catfish Festival will also be able to enjoy carnival rides, children’s games, craft vendors and a specialty country store (that will feature homemade items).

A live entertainment lineup will include the musical stylings of the Fly By Nite band.
