After moving to Houston, Texas, for a year because Hurricane Katrina nearly destroyed the New Orleans area, the 2007 Essence Festival is coming home.

Excluding Mardi Gras and the last year’s Saints season, the Essence Fest is possibly the next hottest thing.

The festival attracts nearly 200,000 people from the across the United States for a weekend of soulful music and French Quarter fun celebrating the African-American culture.

July 5-7, whether your musical tastes are soul, Rhythm & Blues, hip-hop or anything in between, it’s at the Essence Fest in the Superdome.

Headliners include Mary J. Blige, Lionel Richie and Beyonce, Ne-Yo, Ludacris, Robin Thicke, Frankie Beverly with Maze, Ciara, Kelly Rowland, Ne-Yo and Chris Brown.

Super Lounge performers include Ruben Studdard, Kenny Lattimore, Chante Moore Roi Anthony, Legit and Lafayette native Cupid.

During the Essence weekend, empowerment seminars will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the New Orleans Convention Center. The seminars offer a look into the African-American culture.

On Thursday, many displaced Katrina victims will be on hand to share their experiences post-Katrina.

In addition, the Essence Fest Marketplace will feature African-style arts and crafts, Creole food, clothing, art and jewelry from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the New Orleans Convention Center.
