The Louisiana State Fiddle Championship is set for Saturday, July 17, on the main stage in the air-conditioned Prather Coliseum on Northwestern State University’s campus.

Held during the Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival, the competition takes place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and allows fiddlers from all around the state of Louisiana to showoff their amazing bow skills. Winners will receive cash prizes and ribbons in either the Non-Championship Division or Championship Division.

The two top winners from each age category of the Championship Division go on to compete for the Grand Champion title and bragging rights as the state’s best fiddler.

The winner will perform at 12:30 p.m. on the main stage. The 2009 Champion was Ben Robinson of Choudrant, La. Other past champions include Fred Beavers, Greg Edwards, Tex Grimsley, Emily Young and Ron Yule.

The contest is open to all Louisiana residents. There is no entry fee and although preregistering is encouraged and ends on July 1, fiddlers may also register from 8-8:30 a.m. the morning of the championship.

Festival goers are welcome to sitback and enjoy some fantastic fiddle music.
