Spring’s here and the fun is definitely outdoors this month.

If April in the Tri-parishes had a theme, it would be “Rediscovering What’s Great About Southern Louisiana.” This month is blooming with outdoor fairs, festivals and fun things to do.

If art is your thing, Nicholls State University is in its second Jubilee month. Around Thibodaux, Houma and surrounding communities, there’s a myriad of options in music and dance performances and art shows. Art After Dark’s Spring Fiesta and Thibodaux Main Street, Inc.’s Art’s Alive programs will also showcase the talents of local artists and give you a chance to explore downtown in both communities.

A visit to the Art Under the Oaks, the Chauvin Art Festival or the Laurel Valley Spring Festival will all serve as reminders of what great historical landmarks surround us.

And if you’ve got the stamina, there’s no better way to gain an appreciation and understanding of our area’s resources than Paddle Bayou Lafourche. The four-day, 52-mile trip will take you along “the world’s longest street.”

There are a number of family-oriented activities, too. There’s YMCA’s Health Kids Day, the Lockport Food Festival, Cracklin’ Cook-Off, and the Larose Family Fun Festival for starters. The Spencers: Theatre of Illusion is rolling into town, promising a suspenseful evening and leaving you asking, “How’d they do that?”

There are a number of good causes to support this month, too. The Haven, a center for victims of domestic and sexual abuse, is hosting its “Home Is Where the Heart Is” gala. And Terrebonne Parish’s Cancer Relay for Life honors those lost while raising money to help find a cure to this disease once and for all.

Whatever you do this April, get outside and enjoy.

From the entire Gumbo staff, Happy Easter.
