‘Lend Me a Tenor’ in Thibodaux Playhouse

Thibodaux Playhouse’s 52nd season is under way featuring “Lend Me a Tenor,” a comedy by playwright Ken Ludwig.

Set in a 1934 Ohio hotel, renowned tenor Tim Merelli, known to his fans as “II Stupendo,” is slated to sing the lead in “Otello” at a gala fundraiser for the Cleveland Opera Company. But chaos ensues when the performer’s wife, who has mistaken an autograph-seeker hidden in his closet for a secret lover, leaves him a “Dear John” letter. The distraught Merelli accidentally is given a double dose of tranquilizers to calm him and passes out. Saunder, the company’s general manager, is determined the show will go on. He asks his assistant Max to impersonate the opera star. When Merelli wakes and heads for the stage, laughs follow. Thibodaux Playhouse’s Doug Digiralamo directs this farce.

The show runs Oct. 13-15 with curtain at 7:30 p.m.; and Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve’s Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, 314 St. Mary St., in Thibodaux.
