Hungry for great Cajun cuisine? Awesome swamp pop music that rocks your soul?

Then mark your calendar for April 20th to visit the Lockport Food Festival’s La Fete Du Monde.

The festival originally was held in downtown Lockport as a means of raising money for the Holy Savior Catholic School. But because of a rule change within the Catholic church, the fair was discontinued, festival spokeswoman Dee Dee Gaubert explained.

But people had grown to love the annual event by then.

So, several non-profit groups united to bring the La Fete Du Monde back to the downtown area.

Today, the festival is made possible by oranizations such as the Lions Club, Lockport Rotary Club, Knight of Columbus, Bayou Lafourche Folk and Museum, the Town of Lockport and the Lockport Fire Department, Gaubert said.

When you visit, don’t forget to bring your appetitie.

Food connoisseurs will indulge in homemade jambalaya, gumbo, seafood po-boys, onion mums, crawfish etoufe and more.

And for your musical appetite, take in music from the Hospice Band featuring Mason McLain and Grace Broussard, Treater and other swamp pop music groups.

The fun begins on Friday at 6 p.m. with pay-one-price armband rides that admit festival-goers to enjoy favorite amusements like the bump cars, the Ali-Baba Sizzler and other rides.

The armbands are available in advance at the Lockport Town Hall, 710 Church St. Prices for armbands range from $13 to $15, or a weekend armband is available for $50.

The delectable cuisine and swamp pop extravaganza continues through Sunday.

The Hospice Band and Treater perform on Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. On Saturday, Jake and the Nifty Fifties, Wayne Foret, The Gary “T” Band and the Foret Tradition take the stage from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Kenny Fife and Bactrac and La. 56 play from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition to the Cajun foods, swamp music and rides, the festival will host its 4th annual Fete du Monde Car Show on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entry-fee is $15. Top 25 plaques will be awarded.
