The Terrebonne Orchid Society invites Tri-parish residents to come enjoy a colorful weekend at the spring orchid show in the Southland Mall.

The event is set for Friday, April 13, at 10 a.m. The plant show and sale are open to the public. There will be 15 exhibits with orchids ranging from cattleyas and phalaenopsis to the nature orchid, epidermx cytopist.

Because the finicky plants don’t seem to grow well in greenhouses, show chairman said there are not many native orchids in Louisiana. Most planters have to import their orchids from other states.

Matherne has been a part of the society for 17 years, and he has been growing orchids for more than 20 years.

Registration for the competition begins at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Judging will commence promptly at 9 a.m. Saturday, and will be followed by a luncheon. Select American Orchid Society members will judge the displayed orchids.

After the judging is complete, the plant show will reopen to the public. And beginning at noon Sunday, a final orchid show kicks off.

“We extend our hospitality and promise to make this a most memorable event. All the exhibits will showcase tons of award-winning flowers for the public’s viewing pleasure,” said Matherne.

Vendors from several different states and the immediate area will have beautiful blooming plants for sale. Some vendors will also have the necessary products needed for potting.

And Matherne said a help desk will be set up to answer any questions about successfully growing orchids.

Anyone wishing to join the local organization can also obtain membership details at the show.

The Terrebonne Orchid Society has hosted the spring orchid show for more than 20 years. The society is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the preservation, proper care, growing and exhibition of all orchids.

The local society is made up of people from Terrebonne and surrounding parishes that share an enthusiastic interest in orchids and actively participate in a multitude of activities.
