The 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish are hosting the Marcus Jones 5K Fun Run/Walk, formally known as the 12th annual 100 Black Men 5K Run/Walk, on Saturday, Sept. 5, in conjunction with the 75th annual Shrimp and Petroleum Festival.

The race begins at 8 a.m. in Morgan City’s historic district. Walkers immediately follow the runners.

The first man and woman to cross the finish line will win $250 each. And, provided both people are at least 21 years old, the top finishers will receive a $100 gift certificate for dinner at the Loco Restaurant, located inside Cypress Bayou Casino in Baldwin.

One lucky runner or walker will take home a 2009 LSU Michael Hunter poster commemorating the Tiger’s Baseball Championship. The poster is an artist’s proof, signed by Hunter and head coach Paul Mainieri.

Race registration automatically qualifies participants for the drawing. The public can join the fun with a $5 donation.

Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers. In addition, award medals for second- and third-place finishers in the following age groups will be given: 13-and-under; 14-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-54; and 55-and-over.

Proceeds from the 5K Run/Walk benefit the 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish scholarship fund. The organization awards a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from each parish high school. To date, $65,000 has been awarded to local youths.

“We enjoy blessing our youth, and look forward to continuing this tradition,” Robinson said.

The event was renamed in 2009 in honor of Morgan City native Marcus Jones, an avid 67-year-old runner. The tribute recognizes Jones’ volunteerism and work with young athletes, said Clarence Robinson Jr., president of the local 100 Black Men. “There’s no one better to salute than Jones, who serves as a role model to so many,” he said.

Jones said he was “very touched by the honor. Volunteering with kids and participating in their activities is a big part of my life,” he added. “They keep me young.”
