Goal Post, a small drive-in diner along Bayou Lafourche in Raceland, isn’t the average lunch spot.

Service is only available at the stand’s windows, and diners must either eat outside or carry out their food to a location of their choosing. Still, the food – and low prices – outweighs this minor inconvenience.

I ordered a large roast beef sandwich on a bun, which proved to be a messy mistake. Loaded with gravy, which is good for the palate in this case, the slippery roast beef isn’t easily containable with two disconnected slices of bread. An extra hand and a fistful of napkins are needed for this endeavor.

That’s not to say one should shy away from the meal – it’s at the top of Goal Post’s menu for a reason, and the beef is available on a po-boy. Although the tender meat is doused with gravy, it’s neither soggy nor bland, and its subtle flavor does not overpower fresh tomatoes served with it.

I opted for an order of tator tots with the sandwich. The fried side dish was better than expected, crisp and warm.

My guest ordered the double meat cheeseburger and was reminded of late-night snacks after high-school football games. The meal was incredibly filling – he was only able to eat half the fries that came with the order.

Nothing was amazing, but nothing was poor, either, he says. Everything about the food was above average – what one would expect from a drive-in joint.

We dined at a picnic table beneath a canopy on side of the shack-like establishment. Overcast skies kept the sun at bay, but during the heat of summer one would be wise to either bring the food to an air-conditioned location or be prepared to dine from a vehicle.

Goal Post also offers hot dog po-boys, club sandwiches, smoked sausage, fish, shrimp and a host of platters. Prices range from $2.45 (crab burger) to $10.09 (seafood platter).

Goal Post in Raceland may not have interior seating, but the Bayou Lafourche exterior makes a serene dining experience that complements an array of quality menu items
