Recording artist-turned-pastor Donnie McClurkin is coming to Morgan City Memorial Auditorium Jan. 7 as part of the FREE Ministries’ Expectancy Conference.

Admission to the conference is free; however, online registration is required at www.freeministries.net.

McClurkin, the guest speaker, will begin at 7 p.m.

The pastor of Perfecting Faith Church, based out of Freeport, N.Y., McClurkin is best known for his musical hits, “We Fall Down, We Get Up,” “Stand” and “I Call You Faithful.”

Among his honors, McClurkin has won two Grammy’s, 10 Stellar, two BET, two Soul Train and one Dove award. He’s also received the NAACP Image Award for his work.

Born and raised in Amityville, N.Y., McClurkin’s childhood included its share of trials. When the preacher was 8 years old, his 2-year-old brother was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle. That night of his brother’s funeral, McClurkin was raped by his uncle. At age 13, he was again sexually violated, this time by his uncle’s son.

McClurkin found comfort in singing, at the behest of an aunt who sang background vocals with gospel icon Andrea Crouch.

At the height of a successful musical career, McClurkin was hired in 1989 as an associate minister at Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Faith Church. McClurkin served as an assistant to Winans for over a decade.

In 2001, he was ordained and sent out by Winans to establish Freeport’s Perfecting Faith Church.

“It is a blessing and an honor for us to have Pastor McClurkin in our midst,” said the Rev. Brian Lewis of FREE Ministries. “This anointed man of God has a spirit that is so warm and tenderhearted. I can’t wait for him to touch all of us here in south Louisiana.”

FREE Ministries, located at 7716 Highway 182 in Morgan City, is now in its seventh year in St. Mary Parish.
