More than 100 people turned out to vie for the 2011 Center Stage Singing Competition. On Aug. 20, the surviving Top 22 face off at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, beginning at 2 p.m.

At stake is a two-song CD recording session, a microphone, a gig at Downtown Live After 5 in Houma on Aug. 26, a party for 30 guests at Peppers Pizzeria, a personal website and other prizes. And there’s also the Center Stage winner title.

The Top 22, who range in age from 9 to 51, are Whitney Adams, Virginia Ambrose, Celeste Cheramie, J’Leigh Chauvin, Gina Domangue, Katelyn Cortez, Karen Gonzalez, Jasreail James, Annette Johnson, Trevor Leblanc, Allie June Lecompte, Laura LeMaire, Brennan Lyons, Brodrick Lyons, Brittany Miller, Rianna Reed, Rebekah Rice, Cameron Richard, Quinn Richard, Beau Rousseau, Rebecca Trahan and Brittany Williams.

The first round, held in July, featured contestants singing acapella. Event founder/coordinator Ann Duplantis said the competition in the final round is stiffer. This time, singers spar before a live audience, backed by professional sound and video crew, under the glare of the stage lights.

Special guest VOODOO Bayou is also performing, and Houma comedian Steve Shaw is lending his talents to the night.

Tickets to view the sing-off are $12 for ages 13 and up; $7 for ages 2 to 12; and free to children under age 2. Proceeds benefit CASA of Terrebonne.

“This is a very fun, family-oriented event,” Duplantis said. “We have 22 really talented contestants. There’s a line of entertainment throughout the whole show, and proceeds help out our local CASA, which helps abused and neglected children, so as many people as we can possibly get in [the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center], the more money we can get to them.”
