The Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center’s 2006-07 season is going out with a bang, or at least a slight of hand.

The Spencers: Theatre of Illusion, the final production in the Cenac Towing Season of Entertainment, arrives in Houma April 27. The show begins at 7 p.m. at the civic center.

Master magicians Kevin and Cindy Spencer have been turning heads across the country with their blend of cutting-edge illusions, choreography, scenery, dramatic lighting and music.

Critics have compared the couple’s work to legendary marvels David Copperfield and the late Doug Henning. They’ve also been named Performing Arts Entertainers of the Year six times, sharing that distinction only with Copperfield, and holding the title longer than any other performer.

“The critics have been raving about this performance,” said Dave Ohlemeyer, civic center executive director. “This is the production I’m really excited to see arrive. It’s going to be as good as anything you’d see on Broadway or in Las Vegas.”

The couple made headlines in January 2003 when they made the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup “vanish” during the NHL All-Star Weekend. Fortunately, the cup did reappear, along with hockey Hall of Famer Larry Robinson.

The scene was much the same when the Spencers made the Christian rock band Audio Adrenalin appear before 8,000 fans.

“This is a huge touring show, and every bit the value for the dollar,” said Ohlmeyer. “Audiences should be in for a real treat. It’s a great closeout to the season.”

The “Theatre of Illusion” production is one of the country’s largest touring illusion companies. Literally. The Spencers travel with more than 12 tons of state-of-the-art illusions and special effects.

The show is designed for audiences “to experience our performance, not just watch it,” Kevin Spencer said in a release.

“Our show is a combination of several elements and the result of many years of experience,” his wife Cindy added. “The show includes all of our favorite effects. We try to take our audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions. We include some light-hearted illusions as well as some dramatic and suspenseful ones.”

Tickets are on sale now and range from $17.28 to $28.13 and are available at the civic center box office or through Ticketmaster.
