• The Children’s Book Council is the national nonprofit trade association for children’s trade book publishers. The CBC offers children’s publishers the opportunity to work together on issues of importance to the industry at large, including educational programming, literacy advocacy, and collaborations with other national organizations. Special storytimes and crafts at branch libraries will celebrate the joy of reading.


• Registration for the Summer Reading Club “LOL” begins on May 24, 2010 at all library branches. Certificates and prizes will be given to children in pre-school – 6th grade who read 10 library books (or have 10 library books read to them if they cannot read yet). Weekly storytimes and craft workshops (ages 4+), contests with prizes, and professional performers will make you Laugh-Out-Loud all summer.

• Registration for Teen Summer Reading Program “Groovy Summer – READ” begins on May 24, 2010. Read three books or magazines and receive coupons for free stuff. Arts and craft workshops and programs are planned for a groovy summer with friends.

• Friday, May 14 – Dance group Rhythm & Soul will demonstrate hip-hop dance and give a positive message to 7th to 8th graders at the Grand Caillou Middle School. This program is supported by funds from the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government’s Art Funding Program and administered by the Houma Regional Arts Council and Friends of the Terrebonne Public Library.

• The fourth annual Adult Summer Reading Program (ASRP) will take place at all branches of the Terrebonne Parish Library System. Adults can sign up beginning May 24. Prizes and incentives are offered to randomly drawn individuals who complete the program. Check with your Terrebonne Parish branch library for details.

Exhibits:

* James Shutts will display his artwork throughout the month of May. Shutts’ artwork is hand drawn and painted pieces that are religious in nature.

* Nicholls State University ceramics students will display their wood-fired vessels in the downstairs cases in the lobby. This display is on loan from the students at Nicholls State University and their instructor, Jeff Brown.

* Hand smocked garments and other such items are displayed in the cases in front of circ and in the reference department.

Exhibits:

* The photographs of P.H. Polk will be on exhibit from May 17-June17. Portraits and Photographs taken by P.H. Polk represent the free people of color during reconstruction. These original photographs are provided to the Terrebonne Parish Library System by the Southern Arts Federation, made possible by a grant from the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Arts Funding Program, administered by the Houma Regional Arts Council and the Friends of the Terrebonne Library.

Tourist Center

Thursday, May 6, 10 a.m. – Vampire Shrinks Group will meet to discuss Swan Song by Robert McCammon. The library-sponsored book discussion will meet in the Tourist Center Board Room (114 Tourist Drive, Gray, LA).
