Hard-core canoeing enthusiasts can paddle to their hearts desire during the Tour du Teche Friday, Sept. 17, through Sunday Sept. 19.

The 130-mile, 60-hour adventure race starts in Port Barre, northeast of Opelousas, and winds down Bayou Teche to Berwick.

Contestants pay $75 to participate in the U.S. Canoe Association-sanctioned event.

Paddlers can check out the rules online at techeproject.com. Each team is required to have a coureur de bois, or bank runner, who is responsible for checking downstream and taking care of any needs the paddlers may have.

Participants completing the tour down Bayou Teche within 60 hours will receive a voyageur’s toque with the Tour du Teche emblem. Prizes will also be awarded in the solo canoe, tandem canoe, solo kayak, tandem kayak, solo pirogue, tandem pirogue and Texas divisions.

The contest is the brainchild of the Teche Ecology, Culture and History Education Project, which is working to educate the public about the bayou’s ecology, culture and history.

Bayou Teche is on the Environmental Protection Agency’s impaired list for poor water quality. The group is striving to make Bayou Teche a healthier waterway for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, boating, tubing and swimming. For more information call 800-256-2931, email kengrissom@aol.com.
