Hanging over the edge of the bed, a flowing dress paired perfectly with her strappy sandals and the diamonds that sparkle – her favorite gift from the person she plans to be with her entire life. Just a few of life’s decisions.

Meanwhile, just a few miles down the bayou, she is at home and young, barely 17 and making plans of her own. Scared and lonely, she does not want to face the pregnancy alone.

The woman with the happy home, a husband, perhaps one day deciding to start a family, has been in the young women’s shoes but the difference is that she had a choice. Tonight she will give back to those who helped give her options.

She will be attending the Wine Tasting Gala in Thibodaux Nov. 8, an event hosted by the Crossroads Pregnancy Center.

Crossroads Center in Thibodaux is only one outlet women have to better educate themselves about alternatives to an unplanned pregnancy. So far this year alone, the center has helped 700 clients in five parishes. Whether as a sounding block or administering advice, treatment or education, all services are supported through private funding.

“So far we have about 120 guests but hope that more will make reservations in the next couple of weeks,” said Kim Thompson, director of Crossroads. Guests can reserve a table at the Crossroads Wine Tasting Gala by purchasing a ticket. Proceeds from the event go directly to the center.

Individual tickets are $35 and entitle guests to enjoy a night out at Nicholls State University’s Grand Ballroom from 7 to 10 p.m., chatting with friends over hors d’oeuvres and an array of wine. Larger group donations ensure prime seating.

Because of the community’s generous support of the pregnancy center, women in crisis have a place to go, people to speak to, resources readily available and, most importantly, they won’t have to make important life decisions alone, said Thompson.

A silent auction will provide funds for medical assistance and provide women with the knowledge to make the best choice for themselves and their babies. Some 67 percent of women who first approach the clinic contemplate abortion, Thompson said. Crossroads’ position does not approve or condemn, but rather provides tools to make an informed choice, the director explained.

Galas are a good source of funding but assistance is needed not just on special occasions, Thompson said. Crossroads center accepts assistance regardless of the day. Whether monetarily, providing tangible goods – diapers, formula and clothing to name a few of the supplies needed – or by personally donating time, the center doesn’t turn help away.

For now, Thompson will look to the gala, hoping for a good turnout to raise money and awareness – of the turmoil many young women face around the Tri-parishes – and in one night, make a difference in a woman in need’s life.
