Leadership Terrebonne 2023 has officially brought back community projects!

“Leadership Terrebonne has done some projects in the past, but overtime that went away–we wanted to reintroduce our projects again this year so that our groups can work to make a lasting impact on the community,” explained Karen Schilling with Leadership Terrebonne. “We divided the class up into four groups, and each one picked something in the community they wished to do and created a project to help out.” Read more about one of the projects, Rock Da Boot, here.

One Leadership Terrebonne group decided to create the project “Light Up Downtown Houma,” with the mission of flooding the heart of downtown with with light to help make community members feel safer and encourage them to come out for events.

“The town square of every city should be the heartbeat of that city. We are all working to bring back our downtown from the devastation of Hurricane IDA and loss of business from COVID,” reads the group’s project mission statement. “There are multiple campaigns to encourage people to come back downtown and participate in the functions that we have. More and more people are accepting the challenge and are showing up for events.” In response to this increased interest in coming back downtown, the group wished to add light to improve the quality of life for the residents of this parish who want to visit downtown Houma for nighttime events, and to better highlight the beauty of our nighttime events that take place downtown.

The Leadership Terrebonne group added AirLight Pros downtown, which are inflatable LED light towers which offer professional-grade lighting for a wide spectrum of industries. The lights are 12 feet, 64 lbs, and output 74,400 lumens.

β€œThe community had a need and a want to come out of the darkness from Hurricane Ida,” said Cohen Guidry with TEDA, the leader of this Leadership Terrebonne group. “We made that possible for community events through brightening their lives.”

Other members of the Leadership Terrebonne group responsible for this project are Jada Ledet with the Council on Aging, Jessica Williams with Terrebonne ARC, Jodi Dugan with Allstate, Kema Taylor with HPD, Manny Merlos with GIS, Sara Algu with TPCG, and Tracy Pellegrin with TBS.
