Members of the St. Francis Vegetable Garden in Thibodaux are on a mission to encourage their community to lead healthier and more active lifestyles by putting on a health minded event called Up Beet Wellness Expo.

The Up Beet Wellness Expo presented by John Deere will be held on March 24th at the St. Francis Vegetable Garden near downtown Thibodaux. The event begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. This wellness expo aims to help bring healthy eating, overall wellness, and physical fitness to our community. There will be no shortage of things to do at the expo: a bike tour, a 5K, guest speakers, yoga and Crossfit classes, healthy food samples, vegan cooking samples, vegetable plant vendors, bounce houses for the kids, soccer activities, kids garden planting actives are just a few of the events that will be awaiting attendees.

“The event will be a great opportunity for kids and families to participate in planting, education and fun as those in attendance are invited to plant in the garden,” said Chris Ledet, executive director of the St. Francis Vegetable Garden.

There will also be all sorts of vendor booths to shop or learn more from. “Once we made few calls and the word got out, so many vendors were eager to participate,” explains Chris.

Vendors that will be on-site to visit with guests include: Momentum, 409 Fitness, Koko Fitness, Thibodaux Running Club, Bayou Country Cyclists, Preventative Health, Paddleboarding, Chi Running / Julie Morvant, Girls on the Run, Carrot Patch, Skinny Louisiana, HealthE Cafe, La-Terre Master Gardeners, Advance Physical Therapy, South Louisiana Seed Co., Inc., and OrthoLA.

“Our hope for the Up Beet Wellness Expo is to promote healthy living as well as healthy eating and that both can be fun,” says Chris.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students under age 18, or $20 for the whole family. Admission includes all activities, speakers, access to vendors and lunch, provided by the Kiwanis Club. All the proceeds from this event will go to help funding the St. Francis Vegetable Garden, ensuring that the garden will be able to continue offering a health conscious hub to the community.

The St. Francis Vegetable Garden is a unique organization. A combination of individuals, families, schools, businesses, religious organizations, and gardeners come together to plant, grow, and harvest healthy local produce as well as educate others about agriculture and healthy living and giving back to the community. Their mission statement reads: 1.) Grow community vegetable gardens and donate the harvests to local food banks; 2.) Provide teachers and parents with a living outdoor classroom where they can present integrated lessons on health, biology, math and science; 3.) Support local growers by educating the community on the importance of fresh, local food for our health and the region’s economy. There are several different garden locations across the bayou area.
