Lower Terrebonne Parish is under a boil water advisory, officials said, as a result of freezing conditions that have led to low water pressure in lines, and with it the potential for contamination by microbes.

A like advisory is in effect for Lafourche Parish.

Water should be boiled for one full minute in a clean container, advisories from both parishes state. The one minute begins after the water has been brought to a rolling boil.

Demand caused by faucets left on to prevent freezing overnight is one cause of the pressure drop. Terrebonne Parish President Gordon Dove said multiple breaks of water lines running between meters and houses has magnified the problem.

“We have approximately 5,000 water breaks in Terrebonne Parish, that’s what the waterworks is estimating,” Dove said. “Mostly it is on the residential sides of the meters of houses and buildings. It’s causing a slowdown in water pressure.”

Broken lines caused by freezing in unattended fishing camps has been a problem in particular on the parish’s southern end.

Among communities most affected, parish officiasl said, are Presque Isle along Highway 24, highways 55 and 56, Klondyke Road and Sarah Road as well as Grand Bois, Bourg, Montegut, Chauvin, Little Caillou and Cocodrie.

Dove said conditions in Terrebonne overall have otherwise been good, with no roads shut down Wednesday night.

“Everything is fine and public works is on notice 24 hours per day,” Dove said. “We had salt and everything we needed and they did a wonderful job.”
