Houma Police responded to a bomb threat Monday morning at Ellender High School in East Houma that shut down classes for an hour, according to a department spokesman.

Lt. Todd Duplantis said police were called at 9:14 a.m. after a letter was found in a classroom stating that there was a bomb at the school.

Upon arrival, officers evacuated the school and searched for the bomb, he said. After an hour of searching turned up no bomb, Duplantis said the students were allowed back into the building and classes resumed.

A 16-year-old girl was arrested for communicating false information of a planned arson after police learned she left the letter, Duplantis said.

The girl was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Detention Center and her parents were contacted, he said.
