A Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot and critically wounded last week late Tuesday night at the Montegut Post Office after he responded to a call about a suspect wanted on a felony theft charge.

Donald Bourg, who has been a deputy with the sheriff’s office for five years, was shot once in the left calf, buttocks and back. He was in critical but stable condition as of press time, said sheriff’s office spokesman Maj. Malcolm Wolfe.

The shooter, 18-year-old Adrian Broussard, 128 Hope Street in Bourg, was apprehended last Wednesday afternoon following a manhunt. He was jailed at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on a $1 million bond for attempted first-degree murder.

Broussard had been wanted by the sheriff’s office on a $20,000 bond for felony theft and criminal damage to property before the shooting, Wolfe said. Those charges had been the extent of his record. Deputies had looked for Broussard earlier in the day on Tuesday, Wolfe said.

Height and weight information about Broussard was passed on to deputies working the evening shift, Wolfe said, and the suspect’s picture went out. Mug shots were distributed in the area also.

On Tuesday night, an anonymous caller told the sheriff’s office that a man was hiding behind the Montegut Post Office every time a car passed. Bourg arrived at the post office within five minutes. Two minutes later, he radioed in that he had been shot.

Sheriff’s office patrol units found Bourg in a vacant lot north of the post office, Wolfe said. They found no sign of the shooter. The weapon used was a small caliber handgun, according to a sheriff’s office release.

Acadian Ambulance and first responders with the Montegut Fire Department arrived later, along with Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies and Louisiana State Police officers.

Bourg was taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance where he underwent surgery.

Agents with the state Department of Corrections and Wildlife and Fisheries joined law enforcement in the manhunt.

“When we have a major event, we call surrounding agencies if we need help,” Wolfe said. “It’s not known how far the search will go.”

Wolfe said a neighbor spotted Broussard last Wednesday exiting an abandoned house in the area of Roland Henry Street in Montegut.

The neighbor confronted Broussard, who fled, according to a sheriff’s office release. Law enforcement who had been patrolling on Roland Henry Street chased Broussard and apprehended him without incident, the release states.

Bourg, 36, is married with one son and is a graduate of South Terrebonne High School. He has no decorations from the sheriff’s office. Wolfe did not know where Bourg had worked before joining the sheriff’s office.

“He’s been a good deputy,” Wolfe said. “He has done an excellent job.”
