Bye Bye … Banana? Global fungus threatens popular fruit, could soon impact local prices
A popular fruit may be on borrowed time.
National Geographic reported today that bananas may soon be harder to find because of a fungus that’s now arrived in the Americas.
The fungus is not harmful to humans, but it kills plants’ ability to produce fruit, which severely damages, if not destroys plantations that are affected.
The fungus originated in Asia and has slowly spread throughout the globe. Work was done to prevent it from spreading to South American banana farms, but the first reported cases have been confirmed, as of this past week.
Columbia has declared a National State of Emergency to try and fight further spread of the fungus, which experts say travels rapidly when in an area.
For Americans, this likely means a hike in banana prices, but little more. But in poorer countries around the world, bananas are a huge piece of nutrition in natives’ diets, as well as an economic engine.
