A suspected carjacker was taken into custody near Coteau Road and Bayou Gardens Boulevard after leading officers on a brief chase, police confirmed Friday.

HPD Sgt. Travis Theriot said his officers initially respond to a report of a carjacking on Roussell Street. According to Theriot the victim, who has not yet been publicly identified, exited his vehicle to purchase marijuana a little before 2 p.m.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Standard Whitrack, fled in the stolen vehicle, which was spotted by State Police southbound on La. 182 near Bayou Blue Road.

“As troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the vehicle the driver refused to stop and turned onto Coteau Rd traveling west,” Theriot said in a statement. “As the driver attempted to turn onto Bayou Gardens Blvd from Coteau Rd he lost control and plowed into a pile of dirt.”

Whitrack was taken into custody without incident. He was booked at the Terrebonne Parish jail on a charge of motor vehicle theft. There were no records of any charge made concerning weapons possession or armed robbery.

Theriot wants to remind readers that this or any type of criminal activity should be reported by calling Bayou Region Crime Stoppers at 1-800-743-7433 or by texting “GIVEATIP” plus your message to 274637.
