A payroll clerk at a Houma company was arrested last Thursday after her employer discovered she had illegally written checks on the company’s account, a Houma Police spokesman said.

Kristie Rowsey, 35, of 1402 Levee Dr., Houma, a payroll clerk at Hill City Oil in west Houma, had written various amounts to herself and her husband without her employer’s consent, Lt. Todd Duplantis said. Detectives said over $100,000 in checks were written by Rowsey, and only about $26,000 of that amount has been accounted for, he said. The remaining balance, $75,000, is unaccounted for.

Rowsey was charged with felony theft. She was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex, he said.

If convicted, Duplantis said Rowsey could face up to 10 years in prison, with or without hard labor, and a $3,000 fine.
