The Lafourche Parish council passed a resolution to urge the governor and the state Legislature to create one coastal Congressional district, as advocated by Gwen Theriot at the last council meeting.

On Parish President Charlotte Randolph’s request, the resolution was amended to include the language that specifically asks the governing bodies to keep Terrebonne and Lafourche Parish in one district.

It passed 9-0.

“Maybe focusing on the two local parishes might be best,” Randolph said.

State lawmakers will devise a new congressional district layout this year using population figures from the 2010 U.S. Census. Some of the proposed district maps include unifying coastal Louisiana for one representative to serve, but at least one proposes that Terrebonne and Lafourche be separated.

The one that has the neighboring parishes in different districts also has north Lafourche separated from the rest of the parish, according to a graphic Randolph showed the council.

Louisiana will lose one Congressional seat as a consequence of slower-than-normal population growth according to the Census figures.
