Country singer and Louisiana lieutenant governor candidate Sammy Kershaw is pairing up with fellow crooner Mark Chesnutt and Cajun standout Wayne Toups for a free concert Sunday on the steps of the Houma Courthouse.

The concert is set for 3 to 8 p.m.

The event is sponsored by ProtectOurCoastline.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping raise funds for families along Louisiana’s coastal areas most affected by the BP oil spill.

Feed the Children’s Americans Feeding Americans Caravan will also be in town Sunday starting at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Houma (7382 W. Main St.) handing out boxes of food to families pre-identified by area churches. A semi tractor-trailer filled with 25-pound boxes of food, 10-pound boxes of personal care items and bottled water will be situated in the church’s Bayou-side parking lot.

Feed the Children has supplied the area with two truckloads of food and personal care items as well as more than 110,000 pounds of bottled water to the area.

The distribution is the latest stop on Feed The Children’s Americans Feeding Americans Caravan, which has helped more than 105,000 families across the country in cities that are most affected by the nation’s economic downturn. Feed The Children plans to help at least 200,000 families with the caravan by the end of 2010.

“I have been working with protectourcoastline.org to raise awareness around the country for the fisherman and shrimpers who have been affected by this disaster. It is an honor to do this event for the people of the Louisiana coast, along with my friends Mark and Wayne, and I will continue to do everything possible to raise funds for the families that need a helping hand. I hope that this event continues to raise awareness and let’s our fisherman and shrimpers know that they are not being forgotten,” said Kershaw.

“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the oil spill in the Gulf,” added Tony Sellars, spokesperson for Feed The Children. “We sincerely appreciate the work ProtectOurCoastline.org and Sammy Kershaw is doing to help families during this difficult time. We will continue to keep those families in our prayers.”

Kershaw reached fame with hits such as “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful,” “Queen of My Double-Wide,” “Third-Rate Romance” and “Cadillac Style.”

Chesnutt, meanwhile, is best known for “Bubba Shot the Jukebox,” his cover of Aerosmith’s “Don’t Want to Miss A Thing,” “Almost Goodbye” and “Too Cold At Home.”

Zydeco and Cajun accordionist Wayne Toups is a proverbial south Louisiana favorite.
