A New Orleans woman died Monday afternoon when her vehicle crossed the median into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 90 in Raceland, state police said.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Charon Sylve, 56, lost control of her 2000 Toyota Avalon, crossed the median into the eastbound lane, striking a truck, Louisiana State Police Troop C spokesman Bryan Zeringue said. The driver of the 2002 Toyota truck, Michelle Rapagna, 41, of Gray, received minor injuries in the crash, the spokesman said.

A third vehicle – a 2008 Ford truck – driven by Jackie Arnold, 61, of Des Allemands, traveling behind Rapagna, struck the back of her truck shortly after the collision with Sylve’s vehicle, Zeringue said.

Zeringue said Sylve was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Her front seat passenger, Navaeh Washington, 5, of Schriever, was not restrained either; however, the child received only minor injuries in the crash, the spokesman said.

Rapagna and Arnold were both properly restrained, Zeringue said. Arnold was uninjured in the crash.

Zeringue said all the injured parties were treated at Ochsner St. Anne Hospital in Raceland.

Blood analysis is pending on Sylve from the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Meanwhile, Rapagna’s blood is being tested at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

Zeringue said a breath analysis test was given to Arnold, which indicated he had not been drinking.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash, Zeringue said.
