The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has set 6 a.m. Mon., May 8 as the opening day for Louisiana’s spring shrimp season in the area closest to Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes, after nearly unanimous comments from fishermen and dock owners in agreement with that date.

The spring season target brown shrimp, although it is expected that some white shrimp will still be in local waters when the season begins.

The zones comprising the extreme east and west of Louisiana will open on May 14, a week later.

LDWF biologist Jeff Marx told commissioners at the Thursday meeting in Baton Rouge that shrimp size, along with temperature and salinity, justified the May 8 opening for the central zone of the state.

“The shrimp are good now,” said Pointe-aux-Chenes fisherman Arthur Billiot. “And what I am hoping for is that you use your judgement. Put yourself in the feet of the fishermen. If it is ripe pick it. Don’t wait till it falls off the vine.”

Dulac boat and dock owner David Chauvin said that he agreed with the May 8 opening for the Terrebonne region but asked that it open at 6 p.m. instead of 6 a.m. Some fishermen balked at that suggestion.

Commissioner Bobby Samanie presented a motion for the May 8 opening on the central shore, and May 15 for the extreme east and west. Commissioner Jerri Smitko seconded the motion, which passed without further discussion.
