On December 15, 2023, shortly before 7:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on Louisiana Highway 1 (Leeville Bridge) about 5 miles north Louisiana Highway 3090. The crash claimed the life of 27-year-old Johnny Garza Jr. of Cutoff.

The preliminary investigation revealed Garza was traveling north on LA Hwy 1 while driving a 2013 Ford Fusion. At the same time, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford crossed the centerline and struck the Chevrolet head-on. After the collision, both vehicles became engulfed in fire.

Restraint use by both drivers is still being determined due to fire damage. Garza suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Ford suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Standard toxicology results are pending for both drivers. This crash remains under investigation.

While this crash is still under investigation, safe driving is paramount for the safety of yourself and others on the roadway. Always obey speed limits and follow traffic rules to minimize the risk of crashes. Avoid distractions like texting or using your phone while driving to stay focused on the road. Lastly, never drink or consume drugs and drive, as impaired driving can have deadly consequences.

Troop C has investigated 28 fatal crashes resulting in 31 fatalities in 2023.
