Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced this week that the sheriff’s office will conduct separate DWI and seat belt checkpoints on Friday and early Saturday morning.
In a news release issued by LPSO, Webre said the checkpoints will take place at an undisclosed location within the parish. In the seat belt checkpoint, deputies will be searching for seat belt and safety seat violations, as well as brake tag, driver’s proof of insurance and other basic vehicle maintenance.
A DWI checkpoint will begin late Friday evening and will bleed into early Saturday morning.
In that checkpoint, deputies will be looking for drivers who are showing signs of impairment, while also checking other traffic safety issues.
Webre said he wants to remind citizens to find a designated driver if planning to go out somewhere and consume alcohol.
Webre issued a warning and stated that drivers who are suspected of DWI, but refuse a breath test, lose their driver’s license for a year for a first offense.
For a second offense, Webre said the penalty increases to two years without a driver’s license.
Anyone convicted of a DWI while their license is suspended because of drunk driving faces mandated prison time, per laws in Louisiana.
Webre said he also wanted to remind drivers that Lafourche Parish is a “no refusal” parish.
That means that if a driver refuses a breath test, authorities have the right to obtain a search warrant, which allows them to draw blood to test a suspect’s blood alcohol content level at a nearby medical facility.
