Last weekend, the Nicholls baseball team took a Southland Conference series on the road.

This weekend, they’ll hope to do the same from the friendly confines of their home park.

The Colonels will host Houston Baptist this weekend in Thibodaux – a three-game slate that will begin on Friday night at 6 p.m. at Didier Field.

The Colonels come into the week hungry for revenge, after having already lost two games this week. On Tuesday night, the Colonels were shut out by Ole Miss in Biloxi. A day later, the Colonels lost an extra innings thriller to Tulane at home.

Last week, Nicholls’ bats were hot, and the Colonels recorded 10 or more hits in three-straight games against Northwestern State, winning two of those games.

Colonels coach Seth Thibodeaux said hard-nosed, scrappy offense is one of the keys to the team’s season.

“We have to find ways to manufacture runs,” he said. “We want to be tough at the plate. We want to take a base or two. We want to lay down a bunt to move a runner over. That’s who we want to be offensively. With the players we have, that’s who we have to be offensively.”

For Houston Baptist, this will be the team’s first conference games after an 8-7 start in non-conference play.

But the Huskies have proven in the early season that they’re capable of playing with anyone the Southland has to offer.

On Feb. 21, Houston Baptist beat Houston. The Cougars are one of the top programs in the Southeast.

Since then, they’ve beaten Rhode Island twice, while also taking a series for LIU-Brooklyn. This past weekend, the Huskies traveled to play Kansas and won just one game out of three. But the two losses were close.
