Authorities identified the man found bleeding and unconscious behind Chili’s Restaurant in Houma early Saturday.

Ronald Joseph Toland, 46, who is homeless, remained on life support at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center Monday, the Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office said.

Toland performs odd jobs around Houma for money, according to authorities. Witnesses said he was last seen at the Drama Club Lounge on North Hollywood Road around 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Chili’s Restaurant on Martin Luther King Boulevard around 7 a.m. Saturday. They found Toland lying on the ground with lacerations to the back of his head. Attempts to wake the man were unsuccessful.

Acadian Ambulance transported him to Terrebonne General Medical Center; however, he required brain surgery, which was performed at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.

Deputies said blood and coins were found on the ground on the drive-up side of Chili’s, an indication that some sort of physical confrontation had occurred in that area. Toland appeared to have been moved behind the building, deputies reported.

The sheriff’s office said the incident occurred between 2 and 7 a.m.

Because Toland was not carrying any identification, detectives were unable to identify him until early Monday.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office detective bureau at (985) 876-2500.
