Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrested a homeless woman Thursday after she broke a glass candle over her niece’s head and then threw it at the victim and her 19-month-old daughter.

According to a news release, Linda Theriot, 54, entered 3617 Euclid St. in west Houma, and attacked her niece. During the attack, Theriot struck her niece in the head with the glass candle. She then threw pieces of glass from the broken candle at the woman and her 19-month-old niece, whom she was babysitting at the time. A large piece of the glass imbedded in the infant’s head, the release reported.

The victim and infant were treated at a local hospital.

According to the release, Theriot had recently been released from a mental treatment facility.

Deputies said the attack resulted from an argument Theriot initiated.

Officers found Theriot at another relative’s house hiding under a bed shortly after the attack, the release said.

Theriot was booked at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex with one count of aggravated burglary, aggravated second-degree battery and criminal damage to property.

Theriot has several previous arrests in Terrebonne Parish for unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling, cruelty to animals and domestic violence. She was also arrested Thursday for several outstanding warrants for issuing worthless checks.
