From the Houma Fire Department:

At approximately 5pm today Houma Fire Department was dispatched to a kitchen fire in the 400 block of Ashlawn St. in Houma.

Ladder 3 arrived shortly after dispatch to find a single story home with smoke visible coming from the residence. Crews made entry and located the source of the smoke. A fire was located inside the oven with possible extension into the attic. Crews worked to extinguish the fire and check for extension. The oven was locked closed so it was removed from the residence with the fire still contained inside. This was done to limit damage to the home from extinguishment efforts. The fire was extinguished safely outside and the fire was found not to have extended into the attic.

The residents were home when the fire started, and everyone escaped uninjured.

All are reminded that while cooking someone should be closely monitoring the status of all items cooking at all times. No-one should put water or a grease fire, it will only make it worse. Cover any pot that catches fire with the appropriate lid to cut off the oxygen and turn off the heat! Do NOT throw flour or salt on a fire. If a fire starts, attempt attempt to safely extinguish but leave the item in place and call 911, allow firefighters to remove it safley wearing proper equipment.

Crews have cleared the scene and ask everyone to practice fire safety at all times!
