With heads held high despite the heat and humidity, Houma Fire Department firefighters Blake Estevez and Pete Medina began their journey of respect and memorial on the 15th anniversary of the tragic events that forever changed our nation.

Dressed in full gear, these two young men decided they wanted to honor September 11th in their own way this Sunday by walking with the American flag to each of the four Houma stations.

“We are just coming off shift and decided we wanted to do something,” said Estevez. “We are stopping at each one of our stations in the city of Houma till we get to the last one which is over by the air base. We are doing this to remember our fallen brothers from 9/11.”

The solemn journey covered a little more than seven and a half miles.

The men were wearing an estimated 40 pounds of gear during their weekend march. •
