The Lafourche Parish Council adopted salary adjustments last week for three non-civil service employees with the Lafourche Parish Head Start Program.

“The teachers’ salary increases are calculated based on the salary scale for Head Start instructors. They each have different degrees and different levels of experience, which determines what their new hourly rates will be,” said parish Human Resources Manager Kristy Chiasson.

Barbara Wise, Mary Cortez and Troyelene Wallace obtained additional early childhood education degrees in December of 2007, said Head Start Director Martha Babin.

The pay hike will give them a 3.8 percent or (50 cents hourly) salary increase.

Chiasson said all non-civil service employee salary adjustments have to go before the parish council for approval. In the past, the council would adjust the salaries once the certification was achieved.

However, Babin recommended that the salaries be adjusted twice a year, once in January and again in July.

“The salary increases have to go before two boards – the parish council and the Head Start Policy Committee. We want to have a set time to adjust the salary schedules for the end of the fall and spring semesters,” she said.

The funds for the pay increase will come from the federal Head Start grant.

Chiasson said the grant also pays for teachers to obtain additional certifications.

In other business, the parish council also appropriated 2007 revenue money to perform repairs on a rental playing field in Recreation District 4.

; appropriated additional funds for the Upper Larose Pump Station project; and reduced the drainage servitude agreement between Mr. and Mrs. Troy Gilfour and the parish government.
