More than 7,000 registered voters in Lafourche Parish are set to vote on vacant council seats, a property tax mileage and sales taxes in a parish wide special election this weekend.

The Lafourche Parish Clerk of Courts Vernon Rodrigue said four candidates are vying for the Thibodaux City Council District A seat, which was previously held by the Late Norman Swanner.

Those candidates include Democrat Mary Debbie Swanner, Democrat Foye “Put” Lirette, Democrat Eddie Hebert, and Republican Huey Chiasson Jr.

Swanner’s son, Doug, currently holds the District A seat.

Rodrigue said Interim Councilman Mike Billiot and Priscilla Mounic, both affiliated with the Democratic Party, are seeking the council seat the Town of Golden Meadow, which will fill the post vacated by current Lafourche Parish School Board member Lawrence Mounic.

If there is a need for a runoff, it will be held on May 5.

Thibodaux Council Administrator Tommy Eschete said new council members could take office either in April or June.

In addition, three tax issues will be presented on Saturday’s ballot. These include a 10-year, $5 million property tax millage in Thibodaux; a one-percent, 20-year sales and use tax in Consolidated Sales Tax District A for Lafourche Parish, and a one-half percent, 20-year Sales Tax in Road Sales Tax District 2, also for Lafourche Parish. According to state election officials, the road tax was rolled back from one percent.
